Our Privacy Policy
At Jaswal Law, we handle your personal information with the same care and discretion we bring to every client matter.
Privacy Policy
Effective date: April 20, 2026
Last updated: April 20, 2026
1. About this policy
Jaswal Law (“we,” “us,” “our”) respects your privacy. This policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, how we protect it, and the rights you have over it. It applies to visitors to jaswal-law.ca, people who contact us by phone, email, our website contact form, or a Google Ads lead form, people who attend a consultation, and current and former clients of the firm.
Jaswal Law is a law firm located at 5008A – 50th Street, Beaumont, Alberta T4X 1E6 (780-737-9999). We are regulated by the Law Society of Alberta and governed by Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). Where information crosses provincial or national borders, the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) may also apply.
Principal lawyer and Privacy Officer: Shilpa Jaswal.
2. Information we collect
We collect only the personal information we reasonably need. Depending on how you interact with us, this may include:
- Website visitors: IP address, browser and device type, pages viewed, referring site, and date/time of visit – collected through cookies and similar technologies (see Section 4).
- Contact form and email: your name, email, phone number, and a description of your legal matter.
- Google Ads lead form: if you click one of our ads and submit a lead form, Google collects your name, email, phone number, and the type of legal matter, and passes it to us to follow up.
- Phone calls from Google Ads: conversion data such as caller number, date, time, and call duration (the content of calls is not recorded).
- Clients: if you retain us, we collect the information required to provide legal services – including client identification information required by the Law Society of Alberta whenever a lawyer is retained, and, for matters involving the receiving, paying, or transferring of funds, client verification information using one of the four methods permitted under the Law Society’s rules that took effect January 1, 2025 (in-person with original government-issued photo ID, virtual, credit file, or dual process).
We may also receive information from third parties when appropriate and permitted by law – for example, other counsel, courts, land titles, or government agencies – in connection with your matter.
3. How we use and share your information
We use personal information to respond to inquiries, book and conduct consultations (including free 30-minute consultations), provide legal services, communicate with you about your matter, bill and manage trust funds, meet our professional and regulatory obligations (including the Law Society’s client identification, verification, and no-cash rules that address anti-money-laundering risk), maintain business records, and measure the performance of our advertising.
We do not sell personal information. We share it only where reasonable and necessary: within the firm; with service providers who support our practice (including CosmoLex for practice management, trust accounting, and document storage, Microsoft 365 for email and calendar, Google for analytics and advertising, and our website hosting and security providers); with other parties in your matter on your instructions (opposing counsel, courts, mediators, land titles, government agencies); with the Law Society of Alberta in connection with the regulation of our practice; and as required by law or court order. We will only use your information for marketing purposes with your consent.
4. Cookies, analytics, and advertising
Our website uses cookies to operate the site, measure traffic, and support our advertising. The main tools are Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, Google Ads (including remarketing), and Cloudflare. Most browsers let you block or delete cookies in their settings. You can also opt out of Google Analytics at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout, personalized Google ads at adssettings.google.com, and interest-based advertising at youradchoices.ca.
5. Confidentiality and solicitor-client privilege
If you become a client, communications between you and the firm for the purpose of obtaining legal advice are protected by solicitor-client privilege and the duty of confidentiality in Rule 3.3-1 of the Law Society of Alberta’s Code of Conduct. Information shared during an initial
consultation is also treated as confidential, even if you do not ultimately retain us.
6. How long we keep your information
- General inquiries that do not lead to a retainer: generally up to two (2) years.
- Closed client files: generally at least ten (10) years after the matter closes. Original wills and estate planning documents may be held longer, often indefinitely, unless the client instructs us otherwise.
- Trust accounting and related financial records: a minimum of ten (10) full years, as required by Rule 119.35(1) of the Rules of the Law Society of Alberta.
- Client identification and verification records: at least six (6) years after completion of the work, as required by Rule 119.51(3)(b).
7. Security and information processed outside of Canada
We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from loss, theft, and unauthorized access – including access controls, multi-factor authentication, encryption, locked offices and file storage, written agreements with service providers, and staff training. If a privacy breach occurs that creates a real risk of significant harm, we will notify you and the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta as required by section 34.1 of PIPA. In accordance with section 13.1 of PIPA, we are notifying you that some of our service providers (including CosmoLex and Google) process personal information on servers located outside of Canada, primarily in the United States. When personal information is processed outside of Canada, it may be accessible to foreign governments, courts, and regulators under the laws of that country. For questions about specific providers, please contact our Privacy Officer.
8. Your rights
Under PIPA, you have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, request a copy, ask us to correct it, and withdraw your consent to our use of it (subject to legal or regulatory restrictions — for example, records we are required to keep under Law Society rules). We will respond within 45 days, as required by section 28 of PIPA, and will let you know if we need the extension contemplated by section 29. If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your information, you may file a complaint with the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta (oipc.ab.ca, 1-888-878-4044).
